We fight poverty with love Image

We fight poverty with love

By providing programs that serve the body, mind and soul, The Salvation Army Greater Birmingham Area Command works to end poverty - and the root issues that cause it.

General Willam Booth, founder

“While women weep, as they do now, I’ll fight. While little children go hungry, as they do now, I’ll fight. While men go to prison, in and out, in and out, as they do now, I’ll fight. While there is a drunkard left, while there is a poor lost girl upon the streets, while there remains one dark soul without the light of God, I’ll fight. I’ll fight to the very end!”

How we help overcome poverty

Each night in the United States, 17.4 million families go to bed hungry.
An additional 6.9 million families live on the verge of food insecurity.
That means they don’t always know where their next meal is coming from.

Food Pantries
No one should should go hungry in Central Alabama.  Our food pantries offer meal items and food staples to keep cabinets and cupboards full.  If you are in need of food assistance in Birmingham, call 205-328-2420.  If you are in need of food assistance in Bessemer, call 205-425-4303.  If you are in need of food assistance in Shelby or Chilton counties, please call 205-663-7105.

Holiday Boxes
The holidays should not be filled with worry.  Many families in our service area receive holiday meal boxes for Thanksgiving or Christmas.  These boxes contain everything needed to make a complete, healthy, and happy holiday meal.

Lunch Service
The Center of Hope serves a FREE lunch, OPEN to the community, Monday through Friday, 11:30 am - 12:30 pm.  The address is 2015 26th Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35234.

Provide Shelter
Homelessness can happen to anyone.  The Center of Hope offers a clean and safe place for women, men, children, families, and Veterans to find hope.  In 2022, we provided 44,863 Nights of Shelter to our neighbors.  If you are in need of emergency shelter, please call 205-328-2420.
