Heart To God, Hand To Man by Bettie

Oct 9, 2023

Before I was introduced to The Salvation Army, I used to hold stereotypes about people that were homeless. I thought it was all about drugs and addiction. But as I met clients and residents of the shelter, I realized I’m just like everyone I’ve ever judged. It made me wonder, “What if I were in their shoes? What would I do?”

“Life can be unpredictable; circumstances can change in the blink of an eye.”

One thing that has resonated deeply with me during my time with The Salvation Army is the power of storytelling. I believe that everyone has a story, and it’s something that I’ve come to understand profoundly by talking to the women at the shelter. They are unique, facing challenges, triumphs, and struggles. Some are on a journey to recovery, finding jobs and stability. Others are coping with illnesses and seeking a place to call home. Some are mourning loved ones and struggling to make ends meet with a single income.

The Salvation Army is a place of refuge and shelter that provides support and hope. I’m blessed to be able to help people get back on their feet, offering them a safe space to find their footing once again. In my journey here, I discovered a newfound spiritual connection. Reading the Bible and understanding its teachings brought me closer to the Lord. I’ve started to believe that we are all like sheep in a field and must come together and support one another during difficult times.

I wear multiple hats, which makes my time here a fulfilling and diverse experience. I’m both a monitor in the shelter and a part-time helper in the kitchen. Working here feels less like a job and more like a ministry. I find myself drawn to connecting with the women, sharing their burdens, and offering a listening ear. It’s surprising to discover that helping these women is also helping me heal from wounds in my own life.

I cherish every moment of making a difference in someone’s life, no matter how small it may seem. My heart is filled with gratitude for the opportunity to be a light for others and to receive their light in return.
